150 citizens from all European Member States who have been taking part in a unique pan-European debate on how to tackle the economic and social challenges facing Europe have met top policy-makers in Brussels to hand over their recommendations at the 2009 European Citizens’ Summit.(10th and 11th May 2009)
Among them were five Irish citizens who were chosen from an earlier national citizens' consultation in Dublin Castle, organised by the National Forum On Europe. At that event 53 citizens, representing a cross-section of Irish society, debated the economic and social future of Europe and made recommendations. Similar events took place in all 27 Member States.
The five people delegated to attend the Citizens Summit in Brussels were Evelyn Boylan from Scotstown, County Monaghan; Noreen Kelly, Ballyvolane, Cork City; Niall O’Reilly from Maynooth, County Kildare; and Dubliners Brid Bowles, from Lusk and Michael Morrissey, Cabinteely (foreground) who was asked to share a platform with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and other top policy-makers.
They reported that many of the Irish recommendations made the final list which is attached below.
